Election Day Preview – Florida
by Joy Ryan of Meenan, PA (Tallahassee)
Florida voters are headed to the polls today for general elections, with many competitive contests in open legislative seats. Polls in the panhandle don’t close until 7:00 p.m. central time. Floridians will be voting for Senate and House seats in addition to local and federal elections in this year’s cycle. There are also 6 ballot initiatives dealing with minimum-wage, elections, and the process for amending the constitution. There are no statewide races on the ballot until 2022. We will have a report for you tomorrow on the results of today’s general election.
State Legislative Races — Highlights:
Senate: This election cycle the Senate has 21 seats in play. All 20 odd numbered district seats plus a concurrent special election in SD20 which was vacated by Senator Tom Lee (R). Coming into the election Republicans hold a 23-17 advantage in the Senate. The Senate Republicans believe they could get to 25-15 with a great election, meanwhile the Senate Democrats feel they could potentially get to 20-20 if they had a great election night. We don’t think either side gets their ideal results, the Senate Democrats have a realistic chance to pick up a Seat or two in tight races in Senate Districts 9 (Former Representative Jason Brodeur vs. Patricia Sigman a labor and employment lawyer) which was held by Senator Simmons (Rep) and Senate District 39 (Former Representative Ana Maria Rodriguez (Rep) vs Former Representative Javier Fernandez (Dem)) previously held by Senator Flores (Rep). Meanwhile the Republicans are looking to win long shot seats in Senate District 3 (Former Representative Loranne Ausley (Dem) vs. Marva Preston (Rep)) previously held by Senator Montford (Dem) and Senate District 37 (Incumbents Jose Javier Rodriguez (Dem) vs Ileana Garcia (Rep).
Senate candidates that are already elected due to running unopposed in the general:
Democrat: Perry Thurston (HD33)
House: Of the 120 House seats that are in play every two years, 24 of these House seats have been decided without challengers. Coming into the election Republicans hold a 71-46 advantage in the House with 3 seats being vacant. Some of these seats may see a change, the highest profile race is HD 21 where incumbent Chuck Clemons faces Keyser Enneking. Enneking is a doctor at University of Florida Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Both the Democrats and Republicans think they can pick up a few seats this year. When it’s all said and done we expect the House to maintain the majority.
House candidates that are already elected due to running unopposed in the general:
Republicans: Brad Drake (HD5)
Democrats: Ramon Alexander (HD8), Tracie Davis (HD13), Angie Dixon (HD14), Yvonne Hayes Hinson (HD20), Kristen Arrington (HD 43), Kamia Brown (HD45), Travaris McCurdy (HD46), Dianne Hart (HD61), Fentrice Driskell (HD63), Michelle Rayner (HD70), Bobby DuBose (HD94), Anika Omphroy (HD 95), Christine Hunschofsky (HD96), Dan Daley (HD97), Michael Gottlieb (HD98), Evan Jenne (HD99), Joe Geller (HD100), Felicia Simone Robinson (HD102), Christopher Benjamin (HD107), Dotie Joseph (HD108), James Bush (HD109), Michael Grieco (HD113), Kevin Chambliss (HD117)
Constitutional Amendments:
There are six constitutional amendments on the Florida ballot, below you will find a summary of a couple of the notable amendments voters will be weighing in on.
Amendment 2, Raising Florida’s Minimum Wage: Raises minimum wage to $10.00 per hour effective September 30th, 2021. Each September 30th thereafter, minimum wage shall increase by $1.00 per hour until the minimum wage reaches $15.00 per hour on September 30th, 2026. From that point forward, future minimum wage increases shall revert to being adjusted annually for inflation starting September 30th, 2027.
Amendment 3, All Voters Vote in Primary Elections for State Legislature, Governor, and Cabinet: Allows all registered voters to vote in primaries for state legislature, governor, and cabinet regardless of political party affiliation. All candidates for an office, including party nominated candidates, appear on the same primary ballot. Two highest vote getters advance to general election. If only two candidates qualify, no primary is held and winner is determined in general election. Candidate’s party affiliation may appear on ballot as provided by law. Effective January 1, 2024.
Amendment 4, Voter Approval of Constitutional Amendments: Requires all proposed amendments or revisions to the state constitution to be approved by the voters in two elections, instead of one, in order to take effect. The proposal applies the current thresholds for passage to each of the two elections.
