Florida General Election Results 2020
by Joy Ryan of Meenan, PA (Tallahassee)
Floridians went to the polls yesterday in record numbers. Over 11 million voters either participated in early voting or headed to the polls on election day for the general elections, with no abnormalities reported by supervisors of elections. Floridians overwhelmingly supported Republicans up and down the ballot on election day. In addition to President Trump winning Florida, Republicans saw gains in South Florida Congressional Districts and the State House and Senate.
In the Senate, Republicans held a 23-17 seat advantage coming into the election. While the Democrats were confident that they could cut into this lead, that didn’t end up proving true. If results hold, Republicans are currently projected to gain a seat, consolidating their majority into a 24-16 ratio. Republicans have a potential upset in Senate District 37, where Democrat Jose Javier Fernandez was defeated by Republican Ileana Garcia by a margin of 21 votes (but this seat will be subjected to an automatic recount since it’s within the statutory .5% threshold). Meanwhile high profile races in Senate District 9 and 39 both went Republican as Jason Brodeur (Rep) defeated Patricia Sigman (Dem) and Ana Maria Rodriguez (Rep) defeated Javier Fernandez (Dem). The Democrats were able to hold the other big seat Republicans were targeting, with Democrat Loranne Ausley defeating Republican candidate Marva Preston in Senate District 3.
In the House, the results were even more impressive for Republicans. With all 120 seats in play, the democrats thought they may cut into the Republicans 71-46 advantage coming into the election, with 3 seats being vacant. That didn’t hold true, Republicans saw a big turnout resulting in what looks to be a 78-42 margin. One of the biggest races was House District 21 where Chuck Clemons (Rep) held the District, overcoming a well-funded challenge from physician Keyser Enneking (Dem). Republicans picked up additional seats by defeating incumbent Democrats in House District 69 which saw Linda Chaney (Rep) defeating Jennifer Webb (Dem), House District 84 where Dana Trubulsy (Rep) defeated Delores Hogan Johnson (Dem), and House District 104 as Tom Fabricio defeated Cindy Polo (Dem). House District 72, a seat vacated by Democrat Margaret Good for the unsuccessful pursuit of Congressional District 16, was also a seat the Republicans picked up as Fiona McFarland (Rep) defeated Drake Buckman (Dem).
Constitutional Amendments:
Florida approved four of the six constitutional amendments that were on the Florida ballot, below you will find the results for the notable amendments we previewed.
Amendment 2, Raising Florida’s Minimum Wage (PASSED): Raises minimum wage to $10.00 per hour effective September 30th, 2021. Each September 30th thereafter, minimum wage shall increase by $1.00 per hour until the minimum wage reaches $15.00 per hour on September 30th, 2026. From that point forward, future minimum wage increases shall revert to being adjusted annually for inflation starting September 30th, 2027.
Amendment 3, All Voters Vote in Primary Elections for State Legislature, Governor, and Cabinet (FAILED): Allows all registered voters to vote in primaries for state legislature, governor, and cabinet regardless of political party affiliation. All candidates for an office, including party nominated candidates, appear on the same primary ballot. Two highest vote getters advance to general election. If only two candidates qualify, no primary is held and winner is determined in general election. Candidate’s party affiliation may appear on ballot as provided by law. Effective January 1, 2024.
Amendment 4, Voter Approval of Constitutional Amendments (FAILED): Requires all proposed amendments or revisions to the state constitution to be approved by the voters in two elections, instead of one, in order to take effect. The proposal applies the current thresholds for passage to each of the two elections.
